Campaigning

Riding inline to reduce wind drag. Payne's Find, WA During the ride, we campaigned for a variety of things including abolition of uranium mining in national parks, for greater community consultation, for energy efficient technology, against nuclear weapons, against uranium waste dumps, and against our general use of uranium because of it's capacity for incredible danger.

Dressed in white one piece suits on a 40 degree day, we rocked up to the Kununurra mall to do our first public information stall. It created quite a lot of interest - possibly drawing people on spectacle value and holding them with our information. Within minutes the local papers and radio stations were down to visit us. Brigit quickly grabbed their attention with her personal mindful approach and information. We had 7 different brochures to select from on Why - Cycle Against the Nuclear Cycle 2, Australia's Nuclear Cycle, Your Health and the Nuclear Cycle, Proposed Uranium Mines in WA, The Nuclear Cycle, Alternatives to the Nuclear Cycle, No Radioactive Waste on Aboriginal Land.

That was our first experience of campaigning together, and gave us the skills and feeling of support to continue. From then, we regularly held information stalls and bicycle actions as we passed through towns. In smaller communities, we held dicussions with elders or townsfolk. Sometimes we would ride through town, singing and distributing information to bewildered onlookers. When towns were large enough to support a community (or larger) radio or television station, or newspaper, we held interviews.
